Review:

“After her years of looking at pictures that were working so hard, here was something that exerted no effort at all. And yet, hanging there on the wall, lit, it looked strangely like art.” In this way, Lacey Yeager is depicted in Steve Martin’s wonderful new novel An Object of Beauty. Lacey captures the art world by storm, starting at one of New York’s premier auction houses, eventually moving up to own her own gallery.

Martin captures the contradictions, beauty, and drive of Lacey as she makes her way through life: romances, failures, and everything in between. The reader comes to admire Lacey as this page-turner unfolds, even though some of her antics are questionable. With twenty-four full color art reproductions throughout, this novel not only captures Lacey, but, the whole art world which only few individuals are lucky enough to experience.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone; it is a delightful, thought provoking, and fulfilling novel.
